I’ve dabbled in writing over the years, but most of my time and energy has been devoted to editing and thus perfecting (well, maybe not perfecting) the work of writers such as you. My New Year’s resolution for 2007, besides not staying up late writing posts to this site (failed that one already) is to experience the writer’s life on which I claim to be such an expert. So, after much investigation into writing classes and writing workshops, I’ve decided to participate in one at Gotham Writers’ Workshop, one of New York’s most popular and prestigious centers of writing activity.
I already know one great thing about Gotham: they offer their writing workshops both live and online, so even if you live in Texas, you can sign up for the online version and get the same benefits—and maybe even more. In fact, I considered doing an online writing workshop even though I live in New York. They allow the writer a more flexible schedule, and participants can provide one another with more considered, honest feedback than they might in a classroom setting.
I’ll keep you up-to-date on my experience at Gotham Writers’ Workshop as I progress this winter. I’m participating in a Fiction I workshop. Workshops are offered in general fiction writing, in addition to screenwriting and such genre-specific topics as mystery writing and romance writing. Gotham also publishes books, sponsors writing contests, and offers other resources, but they’re best known for their workshops.
Time for me to start putting pen to paper. Wish me luck, and please do share any writing workshop experiences of your own in the comments form below.
In the meantime, many of Gotham Writers’ Workshop’s winter classes still have spots available, so if you’re interested, check out their website.
