Here are a few suggestions for the other writers in your life—or for you, if you like to reward yourself at the holidays for a year of hard labor at your writing desk. I know I do!

A book, of course, is a great gift for anyone, and couldn’t be more appropriate for a writer. Take a look at some of my favorite books for writers here; I’ll soon be adding a review of the wonderful new Francine Prose book Reading Like a Writer.

Backing up your work is something all writers should do as often as humanly possible. I’m sure I don’t have to explain why. External hard drives come in a wide variety of memory sizes and prices; here’s one option:

One word: ergonomics. Sit hunched over a keyboard all day long in a chair that’s not-so-comfy? Then you know what I mean. A lumbar support cushion or a footrest might be highly appreciated.

For the budding screenwriter in your life (and don’t we all have one?), Final Draft software is a must-have. Seriously. I wrote a screenplay once, and Final Draft saved me countless hours of formatting headaches—and proper formatting is essential in a screenplay. It also has lots of other cool features. Trust me, they’ll love you.

How about really getting into the holiday spirit and donating books or money to the Literacy Claus, an organization that provides books to children along the Gulf Coast who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Writers need to write more than their stories, books, and poetry—they’re also faced with the burden of the dreaded query letter. Why not make it a little easier and more enjoyable (and cheaper) by providing some nice stationery and envelopes? But make it professional stationery, no hearts or flowers or dragons or moonbeams. Something like this nice stuff from Staples:
